Single-stage AC cycles at one cooling capacity; two-stage offers two operating levels; an inverter system can vary compressor output within its designed range. Choose based on your home, matched equipment and installation—not the label alone.
Understand what “stage” describes.
When comparing these AC options, ask about the compressor’s cooling capacity. A variable-speed indoor blower does not, by itself, make the outdoor compressor variable-capacity. Your quote should identify both indoor and outdoor equipment.
| Option | How it operates | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Single-stage | Cycles on at one cooling capacity, then off. | Initial installed price, correct sizing, noise and comfort at the proposed model. |
| Two-stage | Uses two cooling capacity levels. | Controls, staging behavior and the actual matched-system rating. |
| Variable-speed / inverter | Adjusts compressor output within its operating range. | Minimum and maximum capacity, compatible controls and complete installation scope. |
Compare the result you want in the house.
If the concern is temperature swings or sound, explain when it occurs and which rooms are affected. Staging is one part of the system. Sizing, controls, airflow and the building itself also matter.
A more advanced compressor cannot guarantee a lower bill in every home. Compare the exact SEER2 rating, operating conditions and assumptions behind any savings estimate. Avoid treating a product family’s best rating as the rating of your proposed equipment.
Ask what each installed price includes.
Compare equipment, thermostat, compatible indoor components, electrical work, drainage, duct changes and startup. Your installed cost also depends on where the equipment sits and how it connects to the home.
- What are the exact matched model numbers?
- How was the capacity selected?
- Are the required controls included?
- Does the proposal address existing airflow problems?
- What written maintenance and warranty terms apply?
Which option should I choose?
