A partial outage can involve a branch circuit, protective device, or the utility service to your home. If several circuits or large appliances are affected, or lights become unusually bright or dim, contact your electric utility promptly. Do not assume a neighbor’s working lights rule out a utility problem.
Identify the extent without opening equipment.
Note which rooms, outlets, and appliances are affected using what you can already see. A bathroom outlet alone is a different pattern from several rooms plus the AC or range. Do not use appliances as test loads or remove panel covers to investigate.
TEP explains that a service-line issue can cause some outlets to lose power while others keep working. Nearby homes may be supplied differently, so a neighbor having power does not prove your utility service is normal.

When to contact the electric utility.
Report a sudden partial outage involving multiple circuits, unusual voltage symptoms, or a possible service-line problem. Tell the utility exactly what still works and what changed. If TEP serves your address, use its outage reporting channel or call 520-623-7711. Homes served by another utility should use that provider’s outage contact.
Do not wait for every light to fail before reporting a concern. Unusually bright or dim lights, especially across different rooms, deserve prompt attention. Avoid running major equipment while the supply is suspect.
Keep clear of damaged lines and wet equipment.
Stay away from downed or damaged power lines and anything touching them. Do not approach outdoor electrical equipment during an unsafe storm condition or enter water near energized equipment. Smoke, fire, shock injury, or immediate danger requires emergency assistance.
Never connect a generator to a household outlet. Any generator connection to home wiring needs the correct professionally installed transfer arrangement. A portable generator must stay outdoors, away from openings, following its safety instructions.

When an electrician is the next step.
If the utility reports that its supply is normal, or the problem is limited to a particular branch circuit, arrange an electrical assessment. Share the utility’s findings and any reference number so work can be coordinated.
For one dead outlet, see outlet not working. For a recurring protective trip, read why a circuit breaker keeps tripping. Repeated resets can hide the pattern without fixing the cause.
Prepare for the interruption.
Keep phones charged when possible and use flashlights rather than candles. If someone relies on powered medical equipment, follow their established backup plan and obtain urgent assistance if their safety is at risk. Record the outage start time and any information your utility provides.
After the fault is addressed, ask what can be returned to service and whether any appliances need further inspection. Use our monsoon outage and surge-protection guide for future planning.
