A breaker is a protective device. Repeated tripping can involve excess demand or an electrical fault. Leave the affected circuit off and arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly resetting it or installing a larger breaker.
Treat the trip as information.
A breaker interrupts power when its protective function responds to a problem. CPSC explains that properly rated breakers protect branch circuits from excessive current and warns against substituting a higher-rated breaker to stop trips.
The immediate goal is to understand what caused the interruption. Repeatedly restoring power without resolving the cause is not a useful troubleshooting plan.

Record what was happening at the time.
Think about the last few occasions: which appliances were operating, which rooms lost power, and whether a specific device was involved each time. Note whether the issue began after a new appliance or other work in the home.
You do not need to reproduce a fault to document it. A memory of the circumstances, a written circuit label, or an existing photo is enough to start the conversation.
- Which lights, outlets, or equipment lost power?
- What was running immediately before the trip?
- Was the event isolated or has it happened repeatedly?
- Were there sounds, odors, heat, or visible damage?
Different protection types need different diagnosis.
Some breakers also provide ground-fault or arc-fault protection. Those functions address different electrical hazards, so the fact that a breaker tripped does not prove that the circuit simply has too many appliances on it.
If a visible label identifies the breaker type, share it with the electrician. Do not remove the panel cover or touch wiring to look for more information.

Know when to leave the area.
For a recurring trip without immediate danger, arrange a qualified electrician’s assessment and leave the affected circuit off. Do not hold a breaker in position or bypass its protection.
