Why do my water pipes bang when a faucet shuts off?

Banging pipes after a faucet, washer, or dishwasher stops? Learn about water hammer, pressure checks, and the questions to ask before choosing a repair.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A sharp bang when water flow stops can be water hammer, a pressure surge caused by rapid valve closure. Pressure, pipe support, valves, and fixture-specific conditions need assessment. A noise alone does not tell you which part to replace or how to adjust the pressure.

Match the noise to the event.

Water hammer occurs when moving water stops abruptly and creates a pressure surge. Fast-closing valves, including those on some appliances, can be involved. A bang at shutoff is a different clue from ticking while a hot pipe warms or a continuous vibration while a fixture runs.

Watts describes water-hammer arrestors as devices intended to absorb this shock. Selection and placement depend on the application; adding an arbitrary fitting is not a diagnosis.

Write down the pattern you already hear.

  • Which faucet or appliance was operating?
  • Does the bang happen when flow starts, while it runs, or when it stops?
  • Does it seem to come from one wall or several locations?
  • Did it begin after a fixture, appliance, or water-heater change?
  • Are there also leaks or an unexpected change in flow?

Do not slam valves repeatedly to reproduce the sound. Share a recording only if it can be captured safely during normal use. Do not cut into walls or crawl into an unsafe space to locate the pipe.

Pressure and flow are different questions.

Strong spray at a faucet does not substitute for a pressure measurement, and weak flow at one fixture does not prove low pressure throughout the house. A plumber can measure conditions and check any pressure-reducing equipment before recommending an adjustment.

Moen identifies banging, leaking, and spitting at fixtures as reasons to investigate excessive pressure. That makes pressure one part of the assessment, rather than proof that the regulator is the only cause.

Ask which finding supports the proposed repair.

The service discussion may include measured pressure, a fast-closing valve, pipe support, or appropriate arrestor placement. Ask what was observed, what will be corrected, and how the result will be verified at the fixture that triggered the noise.

If the recommendation includes a water-heater expansion tank, ask what expansion condition it addresses. An expansion tank, a pressure regulator, and a water-hammer arrestor have different jobs. One should not be presented as a universal substitute for the others.

When banging pipes need prompt help.

A new leak, active spray, visible pipe movement, or water around electrical equipment makes the situation more urgent than an isolated noise. If safe, close a known water shutoff without forcing it and keep clear of hazards. See water heater leak guidance if the wet area is near the heater.
